Have you got experience of working as a teacher and would like to complete a formal qualification granting you Fully Qaulified Teacher Status Q.T.S.)?

If you have Southfields Academy Teaching School's Assessment Only Route to Q.T.S. is ideal for you.

We are one of the small number of institutions that have been chosen by the National College of Teaching & Leadership and the Department for Education to offer the Assessment Only Route to Q.T.S.

The Assessment Only Route to Q.T.S. requires that you have already arranged for a suitable school / further education college to support your application. The school / college must be prepared to host you for the entire time it takes for you to undergo the entire process and also give you sufficient teaching experience (paid or unpaid) and further professional opportunities to allow you to demonstrate that you meet all of the Q.T.S. Standards.

Is this route suitable for me?

The Assessment Only Route is suitable for experienced graduate instructors who would like to complete a formal qualification to gain Q.T.S. It is also suitable if you have substantial teaching experience in either the public or private sector but have not yet gained Q.T.S. Criteria for acceptance onto the Assessment Only Route:

  • you must hold a first degree or equivalent qualification granted by a United Kingdom institution or an equivalent degree or other qualification granted by a foreign institution;
  • you have been assessed by an accredited institution as meeting such criteria as may from time to time be specified by the Secretary of State for Education;
  • you have undertaken a period of practical teaching experience such that the person is assessed by the accredited institution as meeting the specified standards;
  • and that this (teaching experience) has taken place in at least two different schools.

What does the Assessment Only Route involve?

When you apply for this route, you will need a school to recommend you. You will then have an interview and if accepted we will undertake:

  • an initial assessment,
  • portfolio assessment guidance,
  • practical assessment of teaching competancies, including observation and feedback
  • and funding for a medical check to assure fitness to teach, where appropriate.

What will we provide for your school?

  • Final portfolio investigation and mapping against the Standards for Q.T.S.
  • Quality assurance procedures, including moderation of observations and assessments and an independent external moderator.
  • Certification and passport checks, against agreed government criteria.
  • Equality and diversity monitoring.

When will I receive Q.T.S?a picture

After your initial assessment we will assure quality and rigorous adherence to the Standards and will recommend award of Q.T.S. upon completion of a satisfactory portfolio of evidence and demonstration of teaching ability.

How much does this route cost?

The total cost of the Assessment Only Route undertaken between September 2012 and August 2013 is £950. This cost covers application processing, initial assessment, needs identification, portfolio advice and final assessment.
