6th Form Examinations

SIXTH FORM EXAMINATIONS / BTEC COURSE FINISH DATES

Dear Parent / Carer

Many students are now finishing their courses:

  • Year 13 BTEC students finish on Friday 17th May.
  • Year 13 'A' Level students finish on the date of their last exam.
  • Year 12 L2 BTEC students finish on Friday 17th May.

Year 12 AS Level and L3 BTEC students will finish on Thursday 4th July.  BTEC students will work solidly until this date.  AS students will start their A2 studies when thier AS exams have finished.

Please note: there is NO study leave for sixth form students.  The only reason to miss a lesson would be if they had an exam (or had been given permission by their teacher to revise for an exam).

Your son/daughter must use their individual statement of entry to ensure that he/she is attending his/her examination at the right time.

All morning examinations start at 08:30 am and afternoon examinations start at 13:00 pm.  However, students should aim to be in school at least 30 minutes before their exams begin.

If a student arrives late to an examination the school will not permit entry and the examination board will also be informed of the lateness.  The examination board is unlikely to award the qualification to the student unless there is a formal medical certificate to explain the lateness, and even then the examination board is still not bound to award the qualification.

Dates for your diary - Thursday 16th May is an INSET day and Friday 7th June is an IEAP day.

A full GCSE and A Level timetable is available by clicking here.

A copy of the examination rules and code of conduct is available by clicking here.  Please go through these regulations carefully with your son/daughter.

A reminder that the sixth form celebration takes place on Thursday 4th July.  Details will be issued in advance of this date.

A Level results will be available for collection from the school on Thursday 15th August between 9.00am and 11.00am.

I hope that your son/daughter works hard in his/her final preparations for the examination and is rewarded with success on results day.

We wish our students all the best and look forward to the celebrations.

Yours faithfully,

Ned Browne
Assistant Headteacher - Post 16

Physical Education and Sport @ SA

News from Southfields Academy Physical Education & Sport Department!

6th Form Football

On Thursday 14th February our 6th Form first team had a home fixture against St. Cecilia's. The boys started the game well and Marshall was leading the attack superbly. Unfortunately mistakes, slackness and poor concentration crept in, meaning that our visitors were gifted a number of goals. Ryan P between the sticks meant the game stayed close throughout, with a number of outstanding stops. As ever, we looked dangerous on the attack and continued to create chances. Goals game from Abdi Aziz, Salah, George and the impressive Marshall. The exciting and eventful game finished, with the Southfields boys devastated at the result. Too often, too many players were caught out of position and more interested in complaining rather than playing the decent football that they are capable of.

Southfields 1st 4 - 5 St. Cecilia’s. Man of the match and players' player of the match - Marshall.

On Wednesday 27th February, our 6th Form 1st team had the opportunity to make amends for the disappointing result before half term. London Nautical (L.N) were this week’s opponents in a double-header (two games in one). New to the league and with no history on them, we did not know what to expect. With seven key members missing from the squad (Captain Shane and Rilwan injured, Warren ill, Ryan and Omar unavailable and Cyrille and George banned), manager Mr. Davis raided the talented Y11 squad and included Aaron, Davis, Hamilton and Patrick. Instantly, it was evident that L.N were a strong side; comfortable in possession, organised at the back and quick and dangerous on the attack. They were playing with a very direct style and looking to get in behind at every opportunity. A long ball over the top beat the offside trap, leading to an easy finish for the away team. We continued to play with our calm and patient approach, while moving the ball quickly through the final third. Captain Kyle was marshalling the defensive superbly with the help of the impressive Davis. Aaron began to make an impact on the game, with some real classy touches and passes. With two minutes left in the first game, great work down the left from Abdi, a neat lay off from Marco Dane, led to an emphatic finish from the edge of the box from the work horse Salah - yet another goal from him.

Changes were made for the second game, to freshen things up; on came Mohamed and Hamilton. The second game was a different story from the first. We were in total control, dominating possession and looking dangerous. The lively L.N forward cut in from the left and smashed an unstoppable strike past Ryan M. We responded well and continued to apply pressure. A clear cut penalty was waved away, only for a penalty to be awarded moments later. Abdi Aziz was fouled and then stepped up to slot it home. With seconds remaining, a scramble in the box led to the impressive Patrick driving the ball home from close range. The crowd went crazy as we had snatched victory in the dying seconds!

Special mentions to the following... Ryan M for playing in goal and the Y11 lads who were all outstanding - Davis, Aaron, Hamilton and Patrick.

Football Education Programme

Wednesday 27th February - North Westminster College (NWC) 7 v 2 Southfields Academy FEP

Despite the score line this was by far the best display of the season. The boys played some great football and in the first half were by far the better team. We dominated the first 20 minutes and took the lead with Majid Weliyow finishing a lovely move of one touch passing. NWC hit back quickly with their star player scoring a terrific goal powering past three defenders before coolly slotting home. They soon went 2-1 up. We hit back to go in level at half time with a superb free kick from Adam Harti.
At half time the boys were praised for their performance and encouraged to try and match the physicality of the opposition. It was the strength and power of NWC lads that saw them score two quick goals early in the second half. Our lads lost a little bit of confidence and NWC went on to score a few more with no reply from us. Their star player scored 3 and was involved in all their goals.  This young man was a semi-professional player who was the major difference between the two teams. He provided a lesson for our boys in how to use his size and strength fairly to his advantage.
As James, the CFC coach, said to the boys 'it was about the performance and not the result' and the lads played very well against a strong NWC outfit.

Southfields Games Day 2012

As Mr Trace reminded us, Pierre de Coubertin saw the Olympic Games as an opportunity to develop a set of universal principles - or values - that should be applied to education and to society as a whole, as well as to sport itself.  Before the Games began a group of Year 9 Olympic Ambassadors took the Southfields Games Oath on behalf of all students taking part in the Games.

Southfields Games Day got off to an energetic start with performances from the Southfields Dance Crew, followed by a rousing speech from Mr Trace and the Games Oath.  Students applauded with glee as the Olympic torch raced past the crowd!

The Games were then officially launched by Ms Lewis, Ms Carter and Ms Valin.

Despite the awful weather, Southfields ames Day was an exciting experience for both teachers and students.  In the variety of events including, atheltics, water polo, trampolining, basketball, table tennis, rock climbing, cheerleading, badminton, fitness challenge and cycling, everyone enjoyed the day immensely.

Games Day was the perfect opportunity for students to interact with new people, while conquering fears and having fun.  Some students got involved in the games, others cheered on their teammates, or went around interviewing those involved with the sports.

Results:

Year 9 - 1st MNH, 2nd SSA, 3rd BRT
Year 8 - 1st DAS, 2nd DSN, 3rd HNE
Year 7 - 1st DXE, 2nd HXT, 3rd TRA

Olympic Values: - 1st Courage 1108, 2nd Determination 1067 and 3rd Inspiration 888.

Changes to the School Day

Changes to the School Day

After consultation with students and staff; we have decided to extend break times by ten minutes.  This is to allow students to take full advantage of the new dining facilities and take part in the proper seated meal times it encourages.  Students and staff are now able to dine together and are provided with plates and cutlery rather than the far from ideal 'take-away' style boxes as previously had to be the case.

These changes to break times have meant there are knock on changes to lesson times and the school day will now finish at 2.50pm

08:20 Student main gates close!
Students arriving late will need to sign in with the Punctuality Plus+ Co-ordinator.

Project Jugaad

Project Jugaad

Jugaad is a Punjabi word that essentially means using innovative approaches to solve problems effectively given limited resources and, as such, was chosen as the name for this UK-India collaborative educational research project into the role of Maths in Technology.  Year 9 Pupils from southfields Academy and Bluebells School New Delhi, have been investigating the role of maths in an area of technology that interests them; the standard of work has surprised all expectations!  These 13 and 14 year olds have completed extensive research into topics as diverse as maths in medicine and maths in space, and discovered, for themselves, topics that go way beyond the KS3 curriculum such as The Bernoulli Principle and calculus.

You can see examples of the students work below but to read more about this exciting project click here.

Mosaic Runners Up!

Young Student entrepreneurs from Wandsworth Celebrate three consecutive years in the final of National Enterprise Competition

Students from Southfields Academy in Wandsworth have come third in a national enterprise competition, run by HRH The Prince of Wales' Mosaic mentioring caritable initiative, with an idea for an online business foussed on recycling and reducing waste from their school.  Guest of Honour at the event in Central London on 21st March was inspirational young music video entrepreneur Jamal Edwards, founder and CEO of sb.tv and The Times Young Rich List member.  This is the third years that students from Southfields have reached the final which team 2012 went on to win!

The Southfields students were among just five teams out of 3,000 particpants to reach the final of the 2013 Apax-Mosaic Enterprise Challenge, an annual competition designed to give 11-16 year olds first-hand experience of the world of business and encourage them enterprise skills with guidance from experienced business members.

The team of enterprising Year 9 and 10 students from Southfields pitched their innovative business idea to an exciting panel of experts, which included: Co-CEO of Hogan Lovells LLP David Harris, Mosaic Board Member Nabila Sadiq, Director of The Prince's Youth Business International Andrew Fiddaman, CEO of Abu Dhabi Capital Partners Omar Imitaz, My Flash Trash Founder and Made in Chelsea star Amber Atherton and Business woman and star of The Apprentice Liz Locke.  The competition was eventually won by Slough and Eton School, who pitched an idea for a mobile phone that keeps parents informed about their child's school-related business.

The Southfields Team, known as Team Power Five, came third with their idea that was based on the school providing a matching service linking buyers with sellers from the school's community.  The business model enables customers to swap, trade and bid for books, clothes, video games and unwanted gifts.  Some proposed business partners for the innovative venture were Mazumba mobile phones, who would collect unwanted mobile phones from the school, and Barclays Pingit for enabling online money accounts for the under-18s.  The idea also proposed digital video broadcasts to raise awareness and educate the school's online community about protecting the environment.

Commenting, Southfields team leader Zumra Khan, 14 said: "It was a great opportunity and an excellent experience.  Even though we didn't come first, I am very proud of my team and our achievement."

Beat Bullying at Southfields Academy

Beat Bullying at Southfields Academy.

Beat Bullying is a charity which does what it says on the tin.  It looks at shaping people’s attitudes and changing behaviours to help beat bullying amongst young people.  Thirty Southfields students were lucky enough to take part in a training session led by experts.  They are now trained up to be Cyber Mentors and ready to support Southfield’s students and young people in the local community.   Watch this space for future events and news on how our super Cyber Mentors are supporting young people.

“The empathy tunnel (where two students walk through a tunnel of students who are calling them names and mocking them) really helped us to understand how people might feel when they’re being bullied, and will help us to support victims of bullying as a mentor.” Madhiya 8RSL

“The discussions were awesome as you got to hear everyone’s point of view.” Davina 8RSL

“It was brilliant to see how the students developed over the two day period, and how enthusiastic they are on the back of the training to continue in their role as Cyber Mentors and make a difference.” Miss Earthrowl

‘It made all the training and marathon itself worthwhile to see our students maturely tackling a difficult subject matter’ Miss Price

Sally Earthrowl, Head of Geography & Emma Price, Head of Year 8
