Enterprise Education at Southfields
There has been much debate about the term 'enterprise' over the last few years. Enterprise is the ability to turn an idea into a successful business but it is also about having the skills and competencies to succeed in a highly competitive and often challenging environment. Globalisation has meant that our students are faced with an ever-increasing number of economic opportunities and need to be guided into making the right choices, they will then be better placed to help themselves and their families work towards a positive future. At Southfields, we are more committed than ever to ensuring that our young people leave school as enterprising individuals who have developed the skills, knowledge and attitudes to succeed in life.
We are very proud to have been recognised as a champion of enterprise education having been recently awarded the National Award in Enterprise Education.

Our enterprise education focuses on pupil development in three areas:
Enterprise capability
We strive to develop the skills that will encourage students to respons effectively to dynamic environments, these skills include the ability to be innovative, to be creative, to take risks and to manage them, to work towards approaching life with a can-do attitude and the drive to make ideas happen.
Financial capability
We continue to develop programmes that will enable students to manage their own finances and become questioning and informed consumers of financial services; incredibly important considering the burden of debt that many people, young and old, have burdened themselves with in recent years.
Business and economic understanding
This is the ability to understand the business environment. The economy is a key part of our daily lives. It can have a marked impact on the opportunities we have, the uncertainties and risks we face, and our standard of living in general. Teaching young people about the economy will help them to understand a key aspect of the way our society works, how we each contribute, and how it affects us.

Apax Mosaic Enterprise Challenge Southfields students have taken part in the Apax Mosaic Enterprise Challenge run by the Mosaic Group. Founded by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in 2007, Mosaic's mission is to create opportunities for young people of all backgrounds often growing up in deprived communities. Championed by Muslims, Mosaic aims to increase opportunities for understanding between people of different backgrounds. The Apax Mosaic Enterprise Challenge is an annual competition, competing students experience a realistic business scenario where they produce, develop and market a new product through a unique online business game inspiring them to build their confidence and to develop team working and social skills. In addition students have the opportunity of meeting aspirational role models. SA students came a fantastic 2nd in 2011, winning £2,000 for the school. However in March 2012, a group of Year 10 students went one better and won the competition collecting a cup, £3,000 and most impressively winning the opportunity of attending a reception at the House of Lords and meeting H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.
Petrochallenge Petrochallenge is a highly interactive and realistic computer-based experience simulating what it may be like to work for an oil company, exploring for oil and gas in a new province. The Petrochallenge is held at Imperial College London and welcomes small teams from schools across the region to play the game and be mentored by college lecturers and business professionals. Up against stiff competition from high achieving private and grammar schools, SA scientists, mathematicians and economists have performed very well.
Enterprise Awards SA has specifically designed enterprise award badges that are given out in assemblies to recognise students who exhibit enterprising capabilities. Enterprising students can be nominated by tutors or teachers but peers are also encouraged to nominate a classmate by submitting 200 words explaining in what way they think that person has an 'enterprising capability.'
Annual Enterprise Competition SA runs annual enterprise competitions that recognise both vocational and academic skills.
SA Individual Success Stories SA is proud to have budding entrepreneurs at the school who are already developing successful businesses. From Rahmel Orlebar who has set up his own music and fashion brand to Dayam Javed who runs his own website development company. 2012 also saw SA student Samir Mohamed get through to the interview stage of Lord Alan Suagr's Young Apprentice. All of our students are testament to enterprise education at Southfields.
