6th Form Football

On Thursday 14th February our 6th Form first team had a home fixture against St. Cecilia's. The boys started the game well and Marshall was leading the attack superbly. Unfortunately mistakes, slackness and poor concentration crept in, meaning that our visitors were gifted a number of goals. Ryan P between the sticks meant the game stayed close throughout, with a number of outstanding stops. As ever, we looked dangerous on the attack and continued to create chances. Goals game from Abdi Aziz, Salah, George and the impressive Marshall. The exciting and eventful game finished, with the Southfields boys devastated at the result. Too often, too many players were caught out of position and more interested in complaining rather than playing the decent football that they are capable of.

On Wednesday 27th February, our 6th Form 1st team had the opportunity to make amends for the disappointing result before half term. London Nautical (L.N) were this week’s opponents in a double-header (two games in one). New to the league and with no history on them, we did not know what to expect. With seven key members missing from the squad (Captain Shane and Rilwan injured, Warren ill, Ryan and Omar unavailable and Cyrille and George banned), manager Mr. Davis raided the talented Y11 squad and included Aaron, Davis, Hamilton and Patrick. Instantly, it was evident that L.N were a strong side; comfortable in possession, organised at the back and quick and dangerous on the attack. They were playing with a very direct style and looking to get in behind at every opportunity. A long ball over the top beat the offside trap, leading to an easy finish for the away team. We continued to play with our calm and patient approach, while moving the ball quickly through the final third. Captain Kyle was marshalling the defensive superbly with the help of the impressive Davis. Aaron began to make an impact on the game, with some real classy touches and passes. With two minutes left in the first game, great work down the left from Abdi, a neat lay off from Marco Dane, led to an emphatic finish from the edge of the box from the work horse Salah - yet another goal from him.

Changes were made for the second game, to freshen things up; on came Mohamed and Hamilton. The second game was a different story from the first. We were in total control, dominating possession and looking dangerous. The lively L.N forward cut in from the left and smashed an unstoppable strike past Ryan M. We responded well and continued to apply pressure. A clear cut penalty was waved away, only for a penalty to be awarded moments later. Abdi Aziz was fouled and then stepped up to slot it home. With seconds remaining, a scramble in the box led to the impressive Patrick driving the ball home from close range. The crowd went crazy as we had snatched victory in the dying seconds!

Football Education Programme

Wednesday 27th February - North Westminster College (NWC) 7 v 2 Southfields Academy FEP

Despite the score line this was by far the best display of the season. The boys played some great football and in the first half were by far the better team. We dominated the first 20 minutes and took the lead with Majid Weliyow finishing a lovely move of one touch passing. NWC hit back quickly with their star player scoring a terrific goal powering past three defenders before coolly slotting home. They soon went 2-1 up. We hit back to go in level at half time with a superb free kick from Adam Harti.
At half time the boys were praised for their performance and encouraged to try and match the physicality of the opposition. It was the strength and power of NWC lads that saw them score two quick goals early in the second half. Our lads lost a little bit of confidence and NWC went on to score a few more with no reply from us. Their star player scored 3 and was involved in all their goals.  This young man was a semi-professional player who was the major difference between the two teams. He provided a lesson for our boys in how to use his size and strength fairly to his advantage.
As James, the CFC coach, said to the boys 'it was about the performance and not the result' and the lads played very well against a strong NWC outfit. 

Southfields Games Day 2012

As Mr Trace reminded us, Pierre de Coubertin saw the Olympic Games as an opportunity to develop a set of universal principles - or values - that should be applied to education and to society as a whole, as well as to sport itself.  Before the Games began a group of Year 9 Olympic Ambassadors took the Southfields Games Oath on behalf of all students taking part in the Games.

Southfields Games Day got off to an energetic start with performances from the Southfields Dance Crew, followed by a rousing speech from Mr Trace and the Games Oath.  Students applauded with glee as the Olympic torch raced past the crowd!

The Games were then officially launched by Ms Lewis, Ms Carter and Ms Valin.

Despite the awful weather, Southfields ames Day was an exciting experience for both teachers and students.  In the variety of events including, atheltics, water polo, trampolining, basketball, table tennis, rock climbing, cheerleading, badminton, fitness challenge and cycling, everyone enjoyed the day immensely.

Games Day was the perfect opportunity for students to interact with new people, while conquering fears and having fun.  Some students got involved in the games, others cheered on their teammates, or went around interviewing those involved with the sports.
